Check Engine

If the Check Engine light appears while driving – but your car is still performing normally, making no unusual noises – any immediate danger is unlikely. Battery Alert

The battery alert icon on your dashboard is not to be taken lightly. It's there to tell you that your vehicle's battery is either losing charge or completely drained. Many people only notice this symbol when their car fails to start, accompanied by the unnerving whirring and clicking of a powerless engine. While the Pennsylvania Turnpike may not be the longest or oldest road system in America, it's made its mark as a conceptual blueprint for modern interstate highways to follow. Constructed after decades of trial and error, the PA Turnpike provides more than a convenient route to our Conshohocken location.

New Jersey wasn't far behind with the creation of the New Jersey Turnpike, which serves today as – amongst other things – a conduit to Raceway Nissan of Freehold, Monmouth County's premier destination for everything Nissan. The Road to Progress

Before the Pennsylvania Turnpike was conceived, several transport strategies were trialled to unify the state. The Appalachian Mountains, which separate eastern and western Pennsylvania, emerged as the biggest impediment to a new road. An early canal system was established to circumnavigate the mountain pass, but had travelers toiling for days. The advent of trains in the 19th century offered an improvement, but it was the rise of the automobile in the 20th century that introduced a faster, more personal mode of transportation.

The 1915 Lincoln Highway was our country's inaugural attempt at a comprehensive road system. This highway, which stretched from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, was forced to follow many of the same, winding detours around the mountains. Laden with cross traffic and sharp ascents, this initial road (which still survives as part of US Route 30 today) served as a perilous precursor to the Turnpike.

As the automobile fascination soared in the 1930s – even amidst the Great Depression – New York started building America's first express highway: the Bronx River Parkway. Inspired, Pennsylvania came up with the Turnpike concept and established the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission in 1934. Securing funds initially was a challenge, but the project found its hero in President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who managed to integrate the highway's construction into his New Deal strategy.

The construction of the Pennsylvania Turnpike formally kicked off on October 27, 1938. The highway entered service almost two years later, on October 1, 1940.

Jersey's Turn(pike)

A decade after the Pennsylvania Turnpike was completed, it had become clear that New Jersey’s road infrastructure also required an expressway of its own. Car transportation had surged in the northeast in the aftermath of the Second World War, and New Jersey drivers lacked a hassle-free route from New York to Delaware.

Then-Governor Alfred Driscoll proposed the formation of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority in 1949, envisioning the road as a self-sustaining system that would fund its own upkeep and repair through tolls. The construction of the greatest road in the country formally began in January of 1950. Even though constructing a new highway across an already heavily populated state was challenging, progress was extraordinary. The project was successfully completed in a mere 21 months, and the Turnpike opened to traffic in November of 1951.

Momentum continued after this achievement with plans for the Garden State Parkway. The initial stretch of the Parkway took less than four years to build, from July 1952 – May 1956. In 1957, it was extended to connect with the New York State Thruway. Tolls continued to effectively fund and sustain both new Jersey roads.

Today, the New Jersey Turnpike stands as a cultural landmark in our country. It stars in the iconic intro of The Sopranos, it was name-dropped by Simon and Garfunkel, and it quite literally separates Eagles fans from Giants fans.
